British cars use the unit of power known as the taxable horsepower (or hp). The term was coined in the early 1900s. Many models were named for it. While the term "taxable horsepower", was sometimes used to describe a model's power, it was inaccurate as it did not include the displacement of the individual cylinders. Also, the measurement was based on the bore and number of cylinders, not on the actual power output. Due to this, early British cars had engines with undersquare dimensions that limited their power output.

To become an automotive technician, a person must first earn an associate's degree from a vocational college. After completing the program, he/she must take the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. You must attend one of the authorized testing sites to take the test. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require that applicants attend a training class, while others allow them freedom to study at their own pace. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

A person must apply to an auto dealership in order to get started as an automobile technician. Once hired, most new employees start out working as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Some students will learn advanced repair techniques, such as changing shocks, installing air filters, and replacing engines. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. However, some schools offer evening classes if needed.

Once a student is done with his/her apprenticeship he/she can become a master journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. Journeymen also learn to fix complicated problems, such as rebuilding engines or troubleshooting electric components. Because they have a good understanding of the job and what customers expect, many employers prefer to hire journeymen.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (2010), almost 1.7million automotive mechanic jobs were on the market. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. A jobless person can expect to make $20,000 per year. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. Earnings for those with an associate's diploma are approximately $24,000/year. Technicians with a bachelor’s degree made about $27,000 annually. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salary increases are common so professionals who make less than $30,000 a year could realistically expect to earn $40,000 over the next few years.
