The answer to this question will depend on your goals for life. If you are looking for financial gain, then yes. However, if purpose and meaning are what you seek, then no.

You would need to spend years learning how to do everything properly. Also, you would need to hire someone else to fix it if it broke down. Most people avoid doing this. They find something better.

You can make a lot of money if you are looking to do well. However, if you want to have a meaningful and fulfilling life, avoid the mechanic's trade.

Is being an auto mechanic a promising career choice?

If you are determined to excel, the automotive industry offers many opportunities. This field requires hard work and the willingness to learn from others.

Your job will require you to be a good communicator as you'll be talking to customers and other employees. You should also be willing to travel and work long hours, making commuting difficult.

If you are interested in a career working in automotive, then consider attending classes at community colleges. Many schools offer programs specifically designed for students interested in auto repair, sales, or customer service.

Mechanical engineering should be your first choice for a degree. You can earn a bachelor's in as little four years.

In addition, many companies will hire graduates straight out of school. It's a smart idea to begin looking for work while you have the opportunity to study part-time.

After your education is complete, you will probably need some training in order to become an automotive technician.

This means that you must pass the Automotive Service Excellence exam. This test covers topics like engine maintenance, brakes system, suspension, and many other subjects.

After passing the ASE exam, you can apply for a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence license.

A license allows you to perform repairs on vehicles owned by private individuals. In exchange, you'll receive compensation based on the number of services performed.

Not all states require licensing. You will need a license if you want to work in a different state.

Some states don’t issue licenses until a certain amount has been completed. If this applies to you, then you may need to find another option.

What kind of car mechanic jobs exists?

For car mechanics, there are three main areas for employment:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people first think of becoming a mechanic. It's also the easiest way you can get started. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

If you plan to work in a shop, you must apply to join the union. After being accepted into the union, the union will provide training.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. You'll need to meet certain standards after you register.

After you have registered, you will be issued a license to operate your garage.

Your license allows you to sell spare parts and make minor repairs. It won't allow you to fix major engine problems.

In addition to selling spare parts, you'll also be expected to offer advice and guidance to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who specialize in one area of the car. For example, they might only deal with brakes or only replace tires.

However, dealerships may also employ general mechanics who are able to handle all aspects related to car repairs.

These positions often require applicants to undergo specific training before being allowed to work. Employers can then choose the best candidates for their job.

Some dealerships even recruit graduates straight from university. These graduates are familiar with the fundamentals of mechanical engineering so they can easily learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don't belong to any particular dealership. They tend to be focused on high-quality service.

Independent garages have the ability to afford higher wages, as they aren’t associated with any one company. Because these jobs don't have to be associated with any company, they can generally offer better wages than dealerships.

However, independent garages do not necessarily offer better workplaces. Many business owners prefer to manage their own businesses rather than delegating responsibility to others.

So you may find yourself working long hours without having any say over what happens during the day.

Expect to earn lower salaries than if you were working in a dealership.

It's possible to switch between jobs. If you want to work at a dealership, then you simply need to ask your current employer if he would consider hiring you as a mechanic instead.

Or, if your dream is to work for an independent garage you can contact the owner directly.

Unfortunately, finding a new job can be difficult. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

Consider, for example, what type of vehicle you are repairing and whether additional labor charges will apply.

What is the length of an apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic?

The apprenticeship to become an automotive mechanic takes about three years. It includes two years of school and two years as an apprentice. The first year is dedicated to learning the theory and practical skills of the trade. You'll also learn how tools can be used safely and efficiently during this year. After completing the first year, you'll then spend another year on-the-job training where you'll gain experience in different areas of the trade. You'll have the opportunity to attend formal courses during these periods too.

The last year of the program is dedicated to gaining certification and qualifications in the field. These include NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications), which are awarded after passing exams covering specific topics within the industry. Additionally, HNCs are Higher National Certificates that cover general subjects such management, customer service, and business administration. For those interested in pursuing certain trades, City & Guilds certificates are available.

After passing the exam, a candidate must take a state exam before being licensed as an automobile technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Many schools offer classes during regular hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman.
