FAQ

How can I fix my automobile as a hobby.

Take up a hobby in car repair if you have an interest. You could repair them yourself, buy parts for them and sell them. Or just have fun with them. It's a fun hobby that you can do if it interests you.

It's difficult to make this a fulltime job. It requires hard work and dedication. Also, you will need to put a lot of money into it.

If you don't have any good reasons to be involved in cars, it may be better to just let it go.

What are the different types of jobs available in car mechanic?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is the place most people begin to consider becoming mechanics. This is the best way to get started. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

If you decide to work at a shop, you'll need to apply to join a union. After being accepted into the union, the union will provide training.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

If you plan to open your own garage you will need to register with government. You'll need to meet certain standards after you register.

Once you register, you'll receive a license that allows you to operate your garage.

Your license will allow you to sell spare parts and do minor repairs. It will not allow you to repair major engine problems.

As well as selling spare parts you will need to offer advice and direction to customers.

Dealership jobs

Many dealerships have mechanics who are experts in one particular area. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealerships have the option to hire general mechanics who can take care of all aspects.

These positions may require applicants to complete specific training before being allowed on the job. Employers can then choose the best candidates for their job.

Some dealerships will even hire graduates right out of university. These graduates are familiar with the fundamentals of mechanical engineering so they can easily learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages aren't associated with any particular dealership. Instead, they focus on high-quality customer service.

Independent garages have the ability to afford higher wages, as they aren’t associated with any one company. These jobs generally pay better than those at dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many owners prefer to control their businesses themselves, rather than delegating it to employees.

You might find yourself working long hours but having no control over what happens in the day.

Also, expect to make lower wages than if your job was at a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. You can switch jobs easily if you are interested in working at a dealership. Simply ask your employer if they would be open to hiring you as a mechanic.

Or, if your dream is to work for an independent garage you can contact the owner directly.

It's not always easy to find a job. There are plenty of other factors that influence how much you earn.

It could be the type and cost of labor you use to repair your vehicle.

What qualifications do you need to be a mechanic?

A series of exams is necessary to become a mechanic. These include:

  • A general knowledge exam
  • A practical exam
  • An apprenticeship test

These tests will ensure you are familiar with the fundamental concepts of mechanics and physics before starting to work as a mechanic.

Once you've passed these tests, you'll be eligible to work as a mechanic. You will still need to complete an apprenticeship. This will involve training in the trade.

To learn all there is to know about fixing vehicles, you will need workshops and classes. Additionally, you will need to work with experienced mechanics.

If you want to be a successful mechanic, it will take concentration and attention to detail. You will need to pay careful attention to every aspect when repairing vehicles.

To become a successful mechanic you'll need patience. If you don’t enjoy following instructions, this might not be the right career path.

But if you love cars and enjoy fixing them, you could be very happy in this line of work.

To be a car mechanic, do you need a degree? Do I have to study part-time?

A degree isn't necessary, but it certainly helps. Employers are more likely to hire candidates who have completed a complete degree. This shows you have put in the work and achieved success.

You can still study while working, however. Some universities allow students to complete coursework over the summer holidays and finish their studies later in the year. Some universities allow students to take part-time classes throughout the year.

How long does it take to become a good mechanic?

To become a skilled mechanic, you need years of experience and practice. It is best to learn how to fix cars under the supervision and guidance of a professional mechanic.

You will have to spend time in a garage learning about cars and mechanics. You will need to be familiar with mechanical engineering books about mechanics, car design, and other topics.

And you'll also need to attend auto school.

It's important to start early. It doesn't matter if you're old or not to study automotive technology. Get started now if you are interested in becoming a mechanic.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she can be found at auto shops, garages and service centers. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

An associate degree should be obtained from a vocational school if you wish to work as an auto technician. After completing this program, he/she must pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Two sections make up the ASE certification examination. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These testing sites can be found online and through your local dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. The process will vary depending on where an applicant lives. Some states require that candidates attend training courses, while others permit them to learn independently. In addition, some states license technicians immediately after they receive their license, while others wait until they have completed at least six months of employment as an automotive technician.

An applicant should apply to a local auto shop in order to start their career as an automotive technician. Most employees who are hired start as apprentices. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. This is when a student can learn how to do basic repairs such as changing oil, adjusting brakes and replacing tires. Some students are taught how to repair engines and replace transmission fluids. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

When a student has completed his/her apprenticeship, they become a journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. They learn how to do complex repairs such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissives, and troubleshooting electronic components. Many employers prefer hiring journeymen because they know the job well and understand what the customer expects.

After passing the exams, candidates may be eligible to open their own shop if they pass all requirements. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 1.7 million automotive mechanic jobs were available in 2010. That number was expected to grow by 18 percent from 2009 to 2020. When a candidate plans to open his/her own shop he/she should be ready to invest thousands of dollars in equipment.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. Someone who has only a highschool diploma could earn around 21,000 dollars per year. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. Salary increases can be common. A professional who earns less that $30,000 today could reasonably expect a $40,000 increase in the next few decades.
