What is the job description for a mechanic in a car?

Car mechanics can find work in three areas:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people first think of becoming a mechanic. This is the best way to get started. You can either work in a shop run by someone else, or start your business.

You will need to join a union if you want to work in a shop. Once accepted into the union you will be trained by the union.

Once you complete the training, it's time to get started.

Register with the government if you want to open your garage. Once you have registered, certain standards will be enforced.

You will receive a license to run your garage once you have registered.

Your license allows for minor repairs and spare parts sales. It will not permit you to fix major engine issues.

In addition to selling spare parts, you'll also be expected to offer advice and guidance to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics that specialize in one aspect of the vehicle. For example, they might only deal with brakes or only replace tires.

However, some dealerships also hire general mechanics who can handle all aspects of car repairs.

Many of these positions require that applicants undergo training before they are allowed to work. This allows employers to select the most qualified candidates for their roles.

Some dealerships will hire graduates straight from college. These graduates already know the basics of mechanical engineering and therefore have no problem learning about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages aren't associated with any particular dealership. They are more focused on providing top-quality service.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. As a result, these jobs are generally better paid than those at dealerships.

But this doesn't mean that independent garages are necessarily better places to work. Many business owners prefer to own their businesses and not delegate the responsibility to others.

You may find yourself working for long hours and not having control over the day.

Also, expect to make lower wages than if your job was at a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Alternatively, if you'd like to work at an independent garage, then you could try applying directly to the owner of the garage.

Unfortunately, finding a new job can be difficult. You can earn more depending on many other factors.

You might also consider the vehicle type you repair, and whether extra labor is charged.

How can I prepare myself for a mechanic apprenticeship

It is important to have an understanding of what you are going into. You need to understand the mechanics of cars and how they work. You will be able to know exactly where to begin when you arrive at the garage for your first day.

Also, you need to know how fix simple problems, such as tires and lights that aren't working.

This will teach you how to diagnose problems and fix them yourself.

For the purpose of putting them back together again, you'll need to be able to identify how each piece fits together.

Finally, it is important to know how tools can be used safely and efficiently.

These things will enable you to be a competent mechanic.

Can I work as an auto mechanic without a degree? What about part-time study?

While a degree is not required, it does help. Most employers prefer candidates who have studied for a full degree rather than those who haven't. It shows that your efforts have been put in and you have succeeded.

You can still study while working, however. Some universities allow students the flexibility to finish coursework during summer vacations and resume their studies later in year. Others let students take classes part-time throughout the year.

How To

How to be an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician provides repair services and maintenance to vehicles. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she repairs cars, trucks, motorbikes and snowmobiles for customers. An automotive technician must know how to diagnose problems and perform repairs efficiently, safely, accurately, quickly, and correctly.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing the program, he/she must take the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification exam. ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. The first section tests the ability to use mechanical knowledge. The second section tests the ability to apply practical skills. To take the test, you must visit one of the approved testing locations. These locations can be found online, or by contacting your local car dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. For example, some states require candidates to attend a training course, while others allow them to study independently. Some states permit technicians to work immediately after they are granted their license. Others require them to wait at least six consecutive months before they can be licensed.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeships last for three years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students learn how to do advanced repairs, such as installing air filters, replacing shocks, repairing engines, and replacing transmission fluids. Many schools offer classes during normal business hours. Some schools also offer evening classes, if necessary.

After completing an apprenticeship, a student becomes a journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. You will also learn how to repair complicated electrical components, as well as how to remanufacture engines and rebuild transmissions. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

After passing the exams, candidates may be eligible to open their own shop if they pass all requirements. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, nearly 1.7 Million automotive mechanic jobs were available. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. On average, a jobless person could expect to earn $20,000 annually. An individual with a high school diploma can earn about $21,000 per annum. Earnings for those with an associate's diploma are approximately $24,000/year. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earned about $27,000 per year. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. A common trend is for salary increases to occur so a professional making less than $30,000 can reasonably expect to be earning $40,000 or more within a few years.
