Lamborghini Miura

It's hard to believe that a 1966 Lamborghini Miura is almost 50 years old. But that's not all. The Miura was an incredible car. It featured a naturally aspirated V12 with an engine mounted transversely to the driver. The high horsepower allowed it to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds. It even reached a top speed in excess of 163 mph. It was so distinctive that rival marques like Ferrari switched to mid-engined sports cars. Lamborghini Miuras continue to be a highly-coveted vehicle.

Fiat 124 Sport Spider

From 1966 to 1981, the Fiat 124 Sport Spider was manufactured for both European and American markets. The car re-introduced to Europe in 1981 and ended production in 1985. A total of 200,000 were produced. 75% went to the US. There were nine models to choose from, each with its own design and story. The Spider has been a highly-respected classic car for many reasons.

Volkswagen Beetle

The Beetle is perhaps the most famous classic car. Adolf Hitler ordered it as a small, affordable car. The Beetle was initially created as a cheap, reliable, and easily repaired people's car. Volkswagen was selling 1,000,000 Beetles annually by the 1950s when the Beetle was first introduced. The Beetle's performance far exceeded its competition: it could go 115 mph and had a fuel efficiency of 35 mpg US. It was also the first rear-engined car since the Brass Era.

FAQ

What type of job is there for a car mechanic?

There are three major areas of employment that car mechanics work in:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

This is where most people consider becoming a mechanic. It's the easiest way for most people to get started. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

If you plan to work in a shop, you must apply to join the union. Once you're accepted into the union, you'll receive training from the union.

After the training, you will be ready to go and start your job.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. After you have registered, you will need to meet certain standards.

After you register, you will be granted a license for your garage to operate.

Your license allows for minor repairs and spare parts sales. You can't fix major engine problems with your license.

Customers will expect you to not only sell spare parts but also provide advice and guidance.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who can specialize in a particular area of the car. For example, they might only deal with brakes or only replace tires.

Some dealerships have the option to hire general mechanics who can take care of all aspects.

Some positions require that applicants complete training before they can be allowed to work. This means employers can choose which candidates are best suited for their role.

Some dealerships will hire graduates straight from college. These graduates already know the basics of mechanical engineering and therefore have no problem learning about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages aren't associated with any particular dealership. Instead, independent garages tend to concentrate on providing high-quality services.

Independent garages are not associated with any companies so they can afford higher wages. As a result, these jobs are generally better paid than those at dealerships.

But this doesn't mean that independent garages are necessarily better places to work. Many business owners prefer to manage their own businesses rather than delegating responsibility to others.

So you may find yourself working long hours without having any say over what happens during the day.

Also, expect to make lower wages than if your job was at a dealership.

It's possible to switch between jobs. It is possible to switch between different types of jobs if your current employer would prefer you to work at a dealer.

Alternatively, if you'd like to work at an independent garage, then you could try applying directly to the owner of the garage.

The bad news? Finding a new position isn't always easy. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

Consider, for example, what type of vehicle you are repairing and whether additional labor charges will apply.

Is a career in automotive mechanic promising?

For those who are passionate about excellence, automotive is a rewarding industry. It is important to work hard and learn as much from others as you can in order to succeed in this industry.

Communication skills are important as customers and coworkers will often be your main focus. You will need to be able and willing travel for work, making it more difficult to commute.

If you are interested in a career working in automotive, then consider attending classes at community colleges. Many schools offer programs specifically designed for students interested in auto repair, sales, or customer service.

You should choose to study mechanical engineering if you want to get a degree. You can get your bachelor's degree in as little as four years.

Many companies will also hire graduates right out of school. So, it is wise to begin searching for employment while you are still able to study part time.

After you complete your education, you may need to undergo some type of training before you can become an automotive technician.

This means you'll need to pass exams such as the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exam. This test covers engine maintenance and brakes as well as suspension.

Once you have passed the ASE Test, you are eligible to apply for a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence License.

You can perform repairs on private cars by obtaining a license. You will be compensated based on how many services you performed.

Not all states require licensing. However, if you plan to work outside your home state, you'll need to obtain a license.

Some states do not issue licenses until they have received a certain amount or training. If this applies to you, then you may need to find another option.

What qualifications are required to become a truck mechanic

Although you don’t have formal qualifications, you have extensive experience with engines and trucks. Your knowledge is valuable as you are able to quickly diagnose problems and work efficiently.

A solid understanding of diesel technology is also a plus. This will help you understand the components that are needed to fix our vehicles.
